Larry Desmedt (1949-2004) was a genius motorcycle builder, daredevil extraordinaire, and introspective philosopher that will forever be known as Indian Larry. He remains the motorcycle world’s most beloved figure, known equally for his wild antics, his gentleness, and generosity, and the radical bikes that reflected his carnivalesque character. One of the originators of the hardcore-style custom chopper, he combined ingenious metalwork and inventive engineering in highly collectible chrome sculptures that have garnered worldwide respect and recognition.
At the core of the exhibit, Indian Larry: Photographs by Timothy White, there is a palpable and poignant emotion to the photographs which lends insight into the friendship between White and Indian Larry, who proves to be one of White’s most profound subjects. Says White, “I had been photographing him for about 16 years when he died. It was an honest relationship and a real friendship. I loved to photograph Larry’s bikes and I tried to help him in getting recognized as the artist he was.â€
